Further training to become a food technician offers excellent career opportunities for anyone who has already learned a profession in the food or nutrition sector, such as chef, cook, butcher or baker.
As a vocational college in NRW, the ZDS offers further training in 2 years of full-time instruction with a state final examination.
Further training as a state-certified food technician at the ZDS offers career advancement opportunities with more responsible areas of responsibility and is therefore suitable for:

- System caterers …
and all those who work in an occupation that can be assigned to the professional fields of nutrition and home economics or food and hospitality.

What does a state-certified food technician do?
The job description of a food technician (not to be confused with training as a food technology specialist) is very diverse and food technicians work in a wide variety of areas of the food industry.
Their tasks include, for example, planning and monitoring production processes, optimizing these processes and carrying out quality controls with the analysis of food samples.
Research into certain food additives and their possible replacement are also possible areas of work.
Food technologists take on management tasks at middle management level.
Food technicians are employed in the industry:
- Production preparation and implementation
- Quality management
- Application technology
- Sales and customer service
- Product development

Experience
For more than 25 years, ZDS has been training state-certified technicians specializing in food technology.
During this time, more than 700 technician graduates have completed our training program!
Industry proximity & practice
In principle, the curriculum for state-certified technicians does not provide for internships to accompany lessons – as an additional offer, the ZDS offers regular practical units.
Furthermore, the “Technician Day” takes place once a year, on which the prospective food technicians present the results of their project work, which they have carried out with and at various companies.
Employees from the food and confectionery industry from a wide variety of sectors come to the Technicians’ Day. A great opportunity to make new contacts!
Modern classrooms and lecture halls
The ZDS has ten modern classrooms, various conference rooms and two lecture halls. All our classrooms are equipped with Smart Boards and tablets. Both lecture halls at the ZDS are equipped with modern audio and video technology and simultaneous interpreting booths.
Excellently equipped technical centers
Our food technicians learn practical units in the designated food laboratories and in the food technology center. Of course, there are also specially equipped technical departments for each confectionery area, such as a baked goods or ice cream department.
Certification
The further vocational training to become a state-certified technician specializing in food technology is certified by the Hanseatic Certification Agency in accordance with AZAV.

- The free provision of all required textbooks worth €175
- The provision of a tablet for the entire duration of the course
- Student ID card, which entitles you to discounts on local transport and admission prices
Once the training requirements have been met, training begins each year at the start of the school year valid in NRW.
It is offered full-time and takes 2 years, divided into four semesters.
Teaching days are Monday to Friday from 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. with an average of 32-34 lessons per week.
The vacation regulations of the state of NRW apply to this area of further education.
Prerequisites
The following requirements must be met for further training as a technician:
- Vocational qualification in a profession in the field of nutrition and housekeeping or food and hospitality
- At least 1 year of professional experience in the training occupation (after training)
No admission, participation or examination fees are charged for the continuing education program.
Students will incur costs for:
- Company tours
- Work clothing and work equipment
- Catering and accommodation
Further training to become a technician can be financially supported, e.g. by
- the Upgrading Training Assistance Act (Aufstiegs-BAföG) and as a retraining measure through
- the employment agencies
- the German Federal Pension Insurance or Rhineland
- the professional development service of the Bundeswehr
Be sure to contact the responsible authority before the start of the course to find out about the amount and scope of possible funding.
If you are seeking funding under the Upgrading Training Assistance Act (Aufstiegs-BAföG) and the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG), you must contact the relevant authority before starting further training.
On presentation of a training voucher, funding is provided by the employment agencies in accordance with §81 SGB III. We will inform you about details on request.

Once a year, the budding food technicians present the results of their project work, which they have carried out with and at interesting companies.
The next Technician Day will take place on Wednesday, 15.01.2025!
