The history of the Central College of the German Confectionery Industry (ZDS) reflects the close connection between tradition and innovation in the confectionery industry. As early as 1877, chocolate manufacturers joined together to form an interest group in order to meet the challenges of mechanization. The idea of a central training facility was born in 1901 when Otto Rüger, Chairman of the “Verband Deutscher Chocoladefabrikanten” (Association of German Chocolate Manufacturers), proposed a “training factory” to train specialists in a practical and standardized manner.
This vision took concrete shape in 1951 when the “Association of the Central College of the German Confectionery Industry” was founded.
With the support of 164 companies, a location in Solingen-Gräfrath was chosen and construction of the school began in 1952. The facility was opened in January 1954 under the management of Heinz Leder. Since then, the ZDS has established itself as a leading training and research center. Its expertise covers the entire spectrum of confectionery production – from theory to practical application in industry.
Thanks to its expertise and close cooperation with companies in the confectionery industry, the ZDS has been organizing the renowned CHOCOTEC congress for over 40 years.
This congress serves as a platform for exchanging information on the latest developments in chocolate and confectionery technology.
What began in Solingen-Gräfrath now attracts experts from over 21 countries to CHOCOTEC and has a lasting impact on the industry as a driving force and networking platform.
